Despite the name, a disc doesn’t actually “slip” out of place. Instead, the soft inner part of the disc can push through a small tear in the outer layer. This is called a disc bulge or herniation. When that happens, it can press on nearby nerves—causing pain not just in your back, but often down your leg too. This is commonly known as sciatica.
Discs act like cushions between the bones in your spine, helping absorb shock and keep you moving smoothly. But when one gets irritated or injured, it can create pain that’s a bit more intense and harder to ignore.
With general lower back pain, the discomfort usually stays in your back. It might feel tight, sore, or stiff—especially after sitting too long or lifting something awkwardly. The pain is often dull or achy and tends to ease with gentle movement and rest.
A disc issue, on the other hand, is more likely to cause sharp, shooting, or burning pain. It often travels down into the buttock or leg and may come with tingling, numbness, or even weakness. People with a disc problem usually find sitting very uncomfortable and may feel worse when bending, coughing, or sneezing.
Still not sure? A proper assessment is the only way to know for sure. Some people are convinced they’ve slipped a disc when it’s actually a muscle spasm. Others ignore serious nerve symptoms thinking it’s just a "normal backache." That’s why it’s so important to get checked out.
